SPECIFICATIONS FOR
PHOTO SUBMISSIONS

  1. Color prints or slides, of any size. We do not require enlargements, and prints are easier for us to examine. However, slides are acceptable (35mm or better).

  2. Technical qualities are most important. Remember that the photo (for Calendar purposes) will have to be reproduced in a 12" x 12" format. If the photo appears "soft" (out of focus), it certainly wouldn't be a good candidate for enlargement.

  3. Candid shots of Jack Russells which exemplify and portray their unique personalities are always preferred. Studio photos and posed pictures are rarely useful, unless we feel that they communicate something very special.

  4. Try to be Creative (easier said than done!). JRTs are difficult critters to photograph. It helps to start with an idea or concept for a JRT photo, and then try to produce the image. It usually doesn't work the other way around. Real Lucky snapshots are frequently few, and far between. We receive many photos of terriers just standing around in the grass. Try to depart from the ordinary. Even varying the background and setting can help, especially for the Calendars. Photos taken in the snow, or falling leaves, and flower gardens, for example, give us something to consider for representing the different months and seasons. Singularity gives your photos an element beyond the ordinary.

  5. Things to Avoid: confused subjects, cluttered backgrounds, shadows, and flashbulb glare or flash reflections in the dog's eyes. The best photos are often taken from the dog's level (photographing a small terrier on the ground while you are standing above it, usually results in awkward angles or a distorted image.

  6. Subjects we do not include in our Calendars:
  7. Dogs in clothes (although, a bandana, or a typical dog coat, or sweater, is ok).

PEOPLE (unless their face is not visible). Photos taken from behind, or on horseback, or from other angles where the person isn't too visible and does not intrude on the subject of the photo are also ok.

Photographs depicting the killing of other animals, and any photographic images that are depicting dead quarry are unacceptable.

  8. PLEASE REMEMBER to put your name, address, and phone number on the back of each photo submitted. It's best to use a stick-on label which has been written on prior to being attached to the photo. Writing directly on the back of the photo often leaves marks which appear on the front of the photo.

  9. It's best to send us a duplicate print that we can keep in our files. We often draw on the files whenever we need a particular type of photo, such as a rough-coat or a tri-color, etc., or when we are looking for something appropriate for a given month. If you wish that the photo/s be returned, we will do so, but please be patient. Also, remember that if we have to return the photo, this decreases the chances of its being used at some point in the future.

  10. You may send any number of photos you wish at any time. We sometimes receive entire photo albums, and we love looking at them! Usually, work on the next year's Calendar begins as early as January of the preceeding year. However, February, and even March, isn't too late for us to review photo submissions. We also have to maintain "back-up" files in the event that photos already selected don't work out as planned. It's a good idea to send photos in as you get them, and not put it off 'til the last minute.

  11. We offer token payment to the photographers for the photos that we do use. The photographer is considered to be the owner of the photo, and all rights are reassigned as such. We will ask for the photographer to sign a written release for the photos that we decide to use. This is a "one time use" photo release, and any photos that we use will remain the property of the photographer, who may do with it as they please subsequent to our publishing it. Owners will receive several complimentary copies of the JRT Calendar, and, are entitled to purchase additional copies of the edition in which their terrier's photo will appear (at a significant discount).

  12. DO NOT SEND NEGATIVES. If we do need the negative for any photo, we will contact you.

  13. Some of the JRT photos we receive will be selected to appear in our virtual gallery on the Internet, accessible from our ever-expanding site on the WorldWide Web.

  14. Currently, I am also collecting all kinds of JRT photos for a special photo essay book that is being prepared. These photos can be black & white or color. They may also include many of the types of shots that are not normally acceptable for the Calendars. This will be a book depicting the JRT from birth through old age, so there are a lot of different possibilities!

  15. And, Don't forget the JRT Puppy Pocket Calendars! We always need good shots of pups for this, and since those photos are not enlarged, the originals do not have to be as technically correct as the photos which are selected for our large format wall Calendars.

  16. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Don't let all of "fine print" and criteria listed here discourage you. We get to see all kinds of photos. We do not judge you by your ability to take professional calibre photos. We believe you are doing us a favor when you submit a photo for our consideration, and we appreciate the fact that you would take the time to do so. And while I cannot guarantee that every photo sent in to us will be used one way or the other, each and every one will be considered. Over the years, it's always been interesting getting to know so many of you and your JRTs through your letters and photos. It has also helped me improve the Calendars and other projects overall. Each submission has contributed in some way, and there's a part of every one of those I've seen in each thought that's expressed.

Good Luck, and, my thanks to every one who has taken the time to share their JRT's with us. If you have any questions about submitting your photos (that I haven't answered here), please don't hesitate to e-mail us or call us directly.
